Review: Man of Steel (2013)
Not my expectations of course, but still Enjoyable!
Score: 7/10
Man of steel was a fairly enjoyable film. It forms the base very well
for the first timers like me to understand the reasons behind the rest
of the film. It does not carry a lot of layers though, does not give
the characters any depth (other than the protagonist, of course), does
not attach a lot of emotional quotient nor does it have any thrilling
don't-know-what-next moments. The story is monotonous and sticks to
only Clark Kent and how he becomes Superman. But these short comings do
not really harm the film since it always maintains a healthy pace.
The first half contains a lot of choppy editing which may not go down
well with the viewers since every time one would be about to settle in
a scene, it cuts to flash back or the present time. They could have had
just one such scene or may be two, and instead gone for some linear
drama among the characters for us to feel sympathetic of the grave
situations.
The second half with its glimpse of apocalypse and clash of the
unbeatables takes it to the level which again may not serve to every
one's taste buds, still it never loses its quality, just stamps itself
as an out and out super hero action flick. And the fights at times seem
very contradictory to the morals he fights for, destructing everything
that comes in his way and then funnily saving one person without
bothering about the thousands that may have died due to the punches he
threw through the buildings. All of this have been the real cause for
the disconnect it developed with the audience (also the reason for
critics crying foul).
Despite all these flaws, it has top notch performances from the
"star"-cast, visually pleasing cinematography, Zimmer's enchanting
music, Superman's stylish costume and some subtle humour (like the "I
think, he's kinda hot" one). Even the story was not that bad barring
few gaping loopholes: it was more of an alien invasion mythology that
later develops into a super hero film than anything. It had a strong
start with lots of developments in every scene but then in the second
half it became very predictable, lengthy and illogical. It still holds
a lot of promise for the sequel and hopefully Snyder would keep that
exciting and deeper entertaining crime drama than just have relentless
action.
